I opened the door to my new apartment, my small duffel bag containing my meagre belongings slung over my shoulder. I smiled, I liked the look of the place. Closing the door behind me, I walked over to the bed and dumped my bag, sitting down on the soft mattress and pulling off my boots. I wriggled my toes gleefully; it felt a lot better. I glanced around and saw a chest of drawers, so I walked over, dragging my bag and pulled the drawers open. Shoving shirts into one, jeans into another and socks and underwear into the last, I closed the drawers and grinned. It was always easy to put away my clothes. Soon enough they'd probably end up strewn across the room anyway. I took a deep breath in and sighed contentedly. I only had a few other belongings, my phone and wallet which were in my pockets, and a couple of mismatched things. I set my toothbrush and other toiletries up in the small bathroom and turned on the tap, cupping some cool water in my hands and splashing it over my face. I glanced in the mirror and grimaced; I looked tired!
I groaned inwardly, realising that I'd driven for nearly six hours to get here. No wonder I was exhausted! I wandered back out into the main room and placed the apartment key on the bedside table so I wouldn't lose it. I gently took out a framed photo of my little sister and placed it on the bedside table too. I ran a thumb over the paned glass and smiled to myself. Alyssa was only two; she would barely even notice that I was gone. Still, I missed her already.
I fumbled around in my bag for anything else, but that was all. My riding equipment was still down in the trailer, and my guitar was in my truck. That meant I only had to make probably one more trip before I was completely settled in. I figured I'd bring up the rest of my things when I went down to give Gus and Jewel their dinner. Glancing at my watch, I found it was only four o'clock. I still had a couple hours to rest. I shrugged out of my shirt, hit the switch for the airconditioner and timed it for twenty minutes, then climbed into the bed and shut my eyes with a sigh.
