Katie
I walked into the stables in my new cream breeches and may boots and chaps. I was wearing my polo top and my mark todd hoodie. I smiled as I walked into the stables and saw Starlight, I couldn't wait to ride her. I never go to much riding. I walked over to Starlight and then I pulled a pocket out of my pocket and held it out for Starlight. Starlight took the carrot gently and chomped it up quickly. I grabbed my grooming kit from the tack room and brought it back to the stable and went into Starlight's stable. I unbolted my grooming box and pulled out my body brush and flicked over Starlight. Starlight wasn't that muddy because I brushed her over this morning. I brushed her main, tail and forelock. I finished brushing Starlight and put my grooming box back and then I brought my tack back to Starlight. I put her bridle on and did allthe straps up neatly and then I placed her saddle over her back and did the girth up smiling.
I Got my hat and pulled it on ovr my head and did up the strap. I walked Starlight out of the barn and towards the jumping ring looking out for my teaching. I looked around but I couldn't see her. I waited outside the jumping ring with Starlight, I didn't want to go in. I knew I was supposed to wait, I didn't want to be rude and get told off then my teaching wouldn't trust be.

Tamara sat in her office. Bored. She had a lesson this afternoon, and she kenw what she was doing already. She made her way out of the office, dressed in her black jodphurs, short riding boots, a polo shirt and a gilet. She had already tacked up Calmaity, who she was riding, and walked into the barn to get the mare. The grey looked up as her owner came in. The horse nsorted as her owner led her out of the barn towards the outdoor arena. Tara took the horse in and mounted up, warming up Calamity. She stopped and glanced at her watch. Her student was late.

Katie looked around and couldn't see Tara anywhere. She looked down at her watch and then looked around again. She wondered if Tara had forgotten, but that wasn't Tara at all. She looked around and heard some faint hoves coming from the barn. Katie then saw a horse and someone mount up. Katie realized it was Tara and was slightly confused. Had she really forgotten or was she just planning something else.
Katie quickly mounted Star and then trotted her slowly over to Tara and smiled as she approached. "Hi Tara, you haven't forgotten it's my lesson, have you?" She asked in wondering. Katie looked at Tara waiting for her reply. Had she forgotten or had she remembered?

Tara ignored the fact, thinking that Katie would show up soon. She worked Calamity quietly, quite glad Katie was here just yet, so that she could get Calamity a bit calmer without another horse in the arena. She heard someone coming towards her. A horse and rider.
She looked up and smiled at Katie. "hey." She shook her head. "No, I came here for your lesson. Didn't I say it was here?" She smiled at Katie.

Katie patted Starlight and looked to Tara, "No. You said to meet you at the jumping ring. I've been waiting there" I explained to Tara smiling. I walked Star up to where Tara was working her horse. "So where are we going for my lesson if were jumping but not in the ring and what are we doing if were not jumping" I questioned Tara trying to puzzle out what we were going to do.

Tara laughed. "My fault, I thought I'd told you to meet here." She smiled and nodded. "We're in here, we'll be jumping. But we're in here. Who says jumping has to be done in the jumping ring?" She laughed. Hoping that it would be all right with Katie.

Katie smiled to Tara and patted Star, "It's ok. Everyone makes mistakes" I explained to Tara smiling to her. I walked Star forward so I was next to Tara on her horse. "Ok cool. Well.... normally you do it in the jumping ring but I guess it's ok to do it in this ring!" I explained smiling. I patted Star and looked around the ring.

Calamity bucked as Star and Katie entered the ring. Calamity went madly trotting around the ring. Tara reined her into a circle to calm her down and then stopped her in front of katie. She smiled, "Sorry, it's Calamity's nature to be like that." She nodded. "it doesn't matter, you're here know, so we can begin the lesson." Tara adjusted her stirrups then smiled as Katie spoke. She nodded. "Normally, but I'm not normal." She laughed. "if you'd like to just start to warm up Star, I'll set up." Tara explained, smiling, trotting her mount to the middle of the arena then dismounting.

Katie
I stared at Tara's horse as she practically went mental. I watched carefully. "Yeah, it's ok" I explained, Hoping she wouldn't set Star off. If Star got set off then that would be that and she wouldn't be completely calm for the rest of the lesson, She's still have a little moments fizzing up. I smiled to Tara, "Yep. lets get started" I said watching Tara and waiting for her instructions. I nodded at Tara's instructions and then walked Star to the track and moved her forward into a lovely flowing rhythmic trot. Star head came down and she worked on the bit nicely, I looked up ahead and gave a firm but gentle contact an kept my leg on. I went Round four times on one rein and then changed the rein from A to C and then went round again four times. I brought Star down to an immediate halt and she went perfectly square on my command. I then walked her forward and gave her a long rein and a nice pat.

Tara smiled, glad that it was ok. She watched Katie warm Star up, star behaved nicely for her, and Katie was a good rider. She smiled and watched Katie as Star obeyed her. As she watched, Tara walked to the nearest set of poles, green and blue striped ones. She pulled them over to the center of the arena and positioned them as parallel to each other. Tara dragged another two poles of different patterns over to the middle. She put them again a few steps away from the others, measuring for the strides of the horse, Star. She then mounted up and trotted over them to check the distances. happy with the distances. She stayed mounted and looked to Star and Katie. "She ready yet?"

KATIE
I carried on warming up Star happily, She was going very nicely and behaving really well. I did some more work and then came down the three quarter line and did a leg yield nicely out to the track. I was getting going on some lateral work so Star really had to listen. As i met the track I halted Star did a turn on the for hand nicely and then did exactly the same on the other rein. I then got to the corner after I had done the rest of my lateral work and sat and squeezed and asked for a canter. Star promptly but herself forward into a lovely collected bouncy neat canter. I went round the ring once and then changed the rein still in a lovely canter. Star did the most wonderful flying change really nicely and super neatly and I carried on and then canter round the school on the other rein. I asked Star down to a trot and she came into a nice bouncy trot and then I brought her down to a slow walk. I let her have a long rein and stretch out.
When Tara asked me if I was ready I nodded and smiled. "Yep I'm fully ready to go" I explained to Tara smiling and looking at what she had set up.

As Katie warmed up Star, Tara put the touches to the exercise, then when she said she was ready, she nodded. "Ok. I'll just warm Calamity up a bit more, if you want to just go over the poles a few times while I do so." She grinned and walked her mare out to the track.
She trotted forward the mare and took her for a few laps in trot, doing some change of reins and diagonals and figures of eight. After that, she trotted down the long side, and knowing that Calamity wouldn't get he legs in a pickle, asked for canter in the corner, before cantering down the long side and the whole arena. She then cantered a few changes. Then she slowed down to a trot, then a walk, and joined Katie. "All done! Shall we begin?"

I nodded to Tara instructions. "OK" I said smiling, I then squeezed Star on and circled her. I trotted her straight into the poles and let her flow over them nicely. I gracefully stepped over them and came out the other side clear with not a single touch, I patted her as I trotted round back to take them again. I went over them again in a trot and Star went over them nicely again. As I went round I asked Star for a collected canter and brought her up into canter, I turned her in canter and then took the poles at a canter. Star neatly bounced over them with out a touch. I brought her back down to a trot then walk as I heard Tara talk to me. "Yes i done. Yep lets begin" I replied to Tara smiling and then patted Star from going over to poles so nicely.

Tara watched then nodded as Katie said she was ready. She smiled and walked Calamity to the center of the ring. She set up the poles so they were a little further away from each other. "This exercise, is based wholely on concentration and maintaining a degree of accuracy. You know what I mean?" Tara moved the mare to one end of the poles, the end nearest the A end of the arena, then she halted her mare. "I'd like you to trot the first pole. Walk inbetween the first and second pole, then stop, with Star's front legs one side of the pole, her hidn legs the other, but I want you to do that without looking down. Then, move off at a straight trot with no walk, round the arena to E." She smiled. It was confusing. "You got that? Do you want me to demonstrate?"

I watched Tara and listened, "Ok cool. and yep I know what you mean!" I explained to Tara smiling. I listened to Tara instructions and nodded, "Yep, I think I got it all" I explained smiling I then took them all on and then worked Star on. I circled and moved Star into a trot and then Took the first pole at a nice rhythmic pace. I went over the first pole and easily brought Star to walk between the first and second and then didn't look down ready to halt. I felt Star step over with both front legs and tightened my leg and squeezed on the reins. Star halted and brought her back legs up for a square halt. I remembered what to do next and trotted Star on and round the arena to E and smiled and then brought Star back to a walk and patted her as we passed E.

"Great! Of you go then!" She watched them perform the simple task. "Right, a few things, that was good, but I'd like you to do it a slightly different way." She mounted Calamity and explained on her back. "When you stop over the pole, I'd like you to keep things flowing. I didn't particularly want you to do a square halt. Just stop and then go again, it lets everything flow and it looks better. Do you want to try that?" Tara asked, before sorting out her stirrups and checking the girth. "Hold on, let me just give Calamity a bit of exercise, she'll get restless." She trotted the mare around the arena a few times, giving a half halt when she started to get slightly fizzy. Tara nodded. "Done."

Katie I smiled and happily listened to Tara, I was always prepared to improve otherwise I would never come any better. I listened as Tara explained it, I knew what she meant but if something like that happened in a show you would be expected to do a square halt. But I didn't argue. "Ok" I just agreed, I knew Tara would be right anyway. I watched Tara before I did the excersize and then when she was done I nodded and carried out the excersize. I was quite close to the set up excersize so I circled and picked up a flowing trot and Star came down on the bit to me easily. I approached the poles on Star and she knew it had to be more flowing because I was asking her forward. I went over the first pole and walked between the first and second and I felt Star step over I asked her to stop and she did and then I brought her up into a trot, How I did it was actually very flowing, I carried on around the arena to E and walked as I passed E and smiled patting Star happily.

She nodded. "I know you would do a half halt in a show, but I just want you to see what it's like. It is also better for Star to keep her energy up so she can trot straight away over the poles. It helps to keep things flowing for a jump off against the clock." She grinned, pausing to watch as Katie trotted off, before settling Calamity and then watching Katie and Star fully. s they stopped she nodded and clapped as a praise. "That was great!" She smiled. "Did it feel like Star was more willing to trot off again as you kept things flowing?" She asked, wanting to know the answer.

Katie smiled to Tara and then frowned. "Umm.... I don't want to be rude or anything but don't you mean square halt?" She asked hoping Tara wouldn't mind. But then Katie nodded and understood the rest. "Yes, that is true" She agreed with Tara. When I had done it and Tara said it was right Katie smiled and was very happy. "Thank you. Yes, it did feel like Star was more willing to trot, it's definitely more flowing" She agreed with Tara happily. Katie patted Star happily in praise, Star did it very nicely commanding whatever I asked her to do.

Tara blushed. "Yes, meant that. I get muddled a lot." She tapped her head. "Something that affects old age!" She laughed, then dismounted. "Shall we try another exercise now?" Tara adjusted her pony tail and watched Calamity as she rearranged the poles. She nodded, glad that it had. "So, Katie, have you decided what classes your doing in the show? I haven't been able to take a look at the sheet yet. My secretary has been doing them." She smiled.

I smiled to Tara. "Sorry if it seemed rude, I didn't mean it like that though" I explained to Tara then laughed at her funny comment. Tara was really nice, let alone a teacher she was just a great great and awesome friend.
I nodded to Tara and smiled. "Yeah, why not!" I explained smiling patting Star happy i'd got the last excersize right, I hated not getting riding right. It just bothered me so much and i didn't know why because when I got anything else wrong that hadn't anything to do with horses I wasn't so bothered but with horses I always was. I never know why though. As Tara asked the question I grinned widely and replied almost immediately, shows always made me excited rather than nervous. Shows were so much fun and just awesome! "Yes I have. On my lovely Star, the wonderful horse right here I'm doing advanced Dressage and Advanced Show Jumping. And on my other darling horse Blazing Firework I'm doing Advanced Eventing!" I explained happily to Tara pleased with myself I had no idea why though, I just was. "I've already done my Advanced Show Jumping and I think it went quite well. I was so excited for it and am really excited for my other shows!" I explained happily to Tara. "I have my dressage and Eventing yet to come and am really excited for them!" I explained. Then I realized I had gone totally manic or Tara and went a bit red and blushed. "Sorry about that, I get a excited sometimes and go a bit crazy" I explained shyly to Tara blushing.

Tara smiled, nodding. "it wasn't being rude by saying that, it'd good to point things out." Tara laughed. "if you did a half halt in a show, I think it would show you didn't have much control over your pony." She smiled. "I learnt that a long time ago. I was about 11, riding a crazy pony in a dressage test, I really don't know why! But I did a half halt to control her and i got marke down for it." Tara laughed, it was a bit stupid to do that at a dressage show!
"Ok." She got off Calamity and started to sort out the poles as she listened to katie. "That's good. I hope you go ok in the dressage and Eventing then. I myself am doing advanced show jumping, so i'll be sure to ride my best for competition for you." She smiled, Tara loved competing. My daughter is riding in Cross Country, but I'm afraid to say I can't do cross country, I'm awful at it!" She smiled. "Showjumping is the only event I'm doing, with Calamity."
Tara smiled and shook her head. "Don't worry about it. Everyone does it sometimes."

I smiled and went slightly pink as Tara explained to me, I didn't like being rude to people, even worse upsetting them. That's the worst thing. I listened to Tara carefully. "That's a bit silly. They shouldn't of done that. Half halts barely show, it's ridiculous to mark down for that!" I explained rather against it, annoyed for that!
When I heard about Tara to competing I felt so dropped down, I had no chance against Tara! she was an adult and super amazing! uggg, i felt a little glum now but I wasn't going to let it show. "Thank you, I hope I do well aswell. Especially when I'm up against you and your daughter, If she's just like you, she must be amazing! I'm going to have to work extra hard now! even harder than I was planning! But oh well, good competition coming up!" I explained a little more excited and up about it. I knew I couldn't beat Tara but I was going to try my hardest to do so, I hoped I did, but I wasn't going to get my hopes up. All I was going to do was train hard and prepare very well.
I smiled to Tara then laughed slightly when she said she was awful at cross country, I could still imagine Tara doing cross country. I didn't know why but I always thought Tara was an awesome all rounder. "Yeah. Sometimes I just explode with talking, don't really know why, It's just me I guess!" I explained then giggled and added. "Well... my whole family are like that, practically all of us!" I explained laughing.

tara blushed. "Competeing in the horse circuit is hard work. The judges make the decisions." Tara smiled, Katie was a great pupil, and was friendly as well. She wasn't snobby like most of the other pupils that Tamara had taught, and Tara thought that Katie appreciated learning alot more than the other pupils, who thought they had no room to improve.
tara smiled, "don't be put off just cause i'm competing. Try your hardest and don't let it get to you!" tara said, giving the advice. She smiled, katie might end up beating her. To be honest, Tara never knew how Calamity was going to behave until the time came. She smiled at Katie and said, "Shall I sort out the next exercise?
Tara nodded. "I'd like to give cross country another go one day. |I haven't done it since I was 21." Tara paused, "And that was a long time ago, if I'm honest!" Grinning, Tara nodded. "It's great to be bubbly, people are happy to be around you then!"

I knew Tara was right, just the rule was silly and annoying. "Yeah, I know. But the rule is still a bit stupid, I think it should be changed. But I know that the judges make the decision. And that rule is the rule, But that was just my opinion" I explained to Tara but I focused again ignoring the rule, It was only my opinion but I knew it wouldn't change. Some judges were more stingy than others and some were really nice but that was the way it worked.
I listened Tara about what she said for her advise competing against her. I was definitely giving it my all, I never didn't. If i was in the worst foulest mood even ill I still gave riding my all. Otherwise you let down your horse and especially you. "I'll try my hardest don't you worry" I explained laying a little joke out. "Thanks for the advice though" I thanked Tara happily. Then I looked down at Star and gave her a big friendly loving pat. I then looked up to Tara as she asked the next question. "Yeah definitely!" I explained giving the answer to the question back to Tara.
Katie laughed at Tara's comment then smiled and blushed and the really lovely one. "You should still give it a try. I could help you if you wanted. But if you don't want me to I totally understand i'd hate to upset or interfere with you" I explained to Tara smiling to her. I smiled and blushed at Tara's last comment. "Thanks, that really kind of you. It's the same with you, your such a kind a nice person to be around!" I explained to Tara smiling happily to Tara.

Tara nodded. "Sometimes that's what I hate about competeing, the rules! I wish you could just run free and do your own thing. Dont you?" Tara laughed, judged at competitions were the worst things about them. Tara fiddled with Calamity's mane, a few stray locks coming out. She dropped them to the ground and watched them flutter down. It was a nice sight. At the moment, she was wondering what to do as the next exercise, she hadn't though it through that far yet.
Tara liked competeing, and it was great to have new meat on the fields to compete against. She loved riding, but competeing was the best of it, apart from all the moans about the judges and the rules she'd already made. tara grinned. "I look forward to it. It shall be fun. Good luck to you." She smiled, and blushed at the thanks. "Anytime, Katie."
Tara smiled, "Yeah, I'd like that. It would be fun." She nodded, it would be nice to start up cross country again. She knew everything, just needed some polishing up. "I know all the basics of course, I just need to go over everything, and it should be there soon enough." Tara grinned. "I'd like to have some tips and stuff from you, if you wouldn't mind. Then we'd be teaching each other." She laughed at the thought, and nodded.

I nodded as Tara said that. "Yeah, i agree, I wish you could make up what the judges judged you on and you could make up your own test, Like a free test full of your best moves!" I explained. I looked around, I knew it was nice talking to Tara about things, she was so chatty and nice and kind, But in a way I just wanted to get on with my lesson. I wanted to ride, improve.
I just did love competing it was fun and a really nice thing to do, The competitiveness was sometimes over the top and horrible but that didn't happen very often, There wern't that many people around at the moment like that, Not that I knew of anyway or that I had competed against, Yet. "I'll help you, I love cross country, It's so fun. Some of the combinations are hard but that's the point otherwise it would be so boring and easy and simple" I explained to Tara. I'd love to help Tara with cross country, it would be really fun. "I'll definitely do it for you. Thanks by the way" I explained and blushed at Tara saying 'I'd like to have some tips and stuff from you' I thought that was such a pleasure. I laughed at the though aswell of Tara and me teaching each other.
I smiled to Tara then looked around waiting for Tara to say what the next excersize was. I decided I didn't want to keep to keep Starlight standing around so I gathered her up and brought her in and started to walk her round, I pushed into a trot and went round the ring doing various things, I did some circles and figures of eights. I just didn't want to keep Star standing around, I didn't want her to get bored. I spoke over to Tara. "I hope you don't mind me going round the ring I just want to keep Star standing around, I want her to keep going and moving forward, hope you don't mind" I explained to Tara smiling.

Tara smiled. She dismounted and listened to Katie apon star as I got the next exercise ready. She'd decided what it was, it was a good exercise for control when jumping. She already had the few poles out, so she dragged a fourth to the other side of the arena. It was time to get on with the lesson now. But the talking hasd been good too. "I'm going to add another half hour onto your lesson since we have just been talking this first few 30 minutes. But it was good to talk, to share interests about horse riding." She explained, putting down the pole.
"Thanks." She said. "Once this lesson is over, we'll have to arrange something properly. Times and everything." Tara bent down to adjust the pole that was just off the track. She took a red and purple block (one of each) and put them either side of the pole. So that it was like a jump, but with a pole on the floor between the two blocks/wings. Tara watched as Star got going to keep exercised around the ring while she setted up. Katie explained and Tara understood. She nodded. "Yep, that's fine, I may take a while to get this exercise properly sorted. So keep doing some transitions to keep her warmed up so that when we do some faster work she doesnt get all fizzy." Tara finished with that section and then took a cone and put it up at the C end of the school, just of the track, a little further than C, opposite the three poles that were already set out.
She smiled, done! Now she had to explain. She turned to Katie. "Come over and I'll explain. " While she waited she mounted up Calamity and gave her a brief walk and trot about. She turned to Katie. "I'd like you to get up a nice trot on the right rein from A. If by the time you get to C, Star hasn't got a fast enough or lively enough trot going, turn a twenty metre circle at C. Then, turn round your cone for a nice turn, and trot over your poles. As you go over them, keep straight, and don't let Star drift to one side in the slightest. Be positive with the steering, and keep her going until you reach the track. When you get on the track, turn, and immediately go into canter. Then turn up off the track at the A end, and canter over your single pole in between the blocks. Yet, I don't want Star to jump it, or even elevate just a little, I want her to just go over it like a trotting pole, but in canter. Got that? Give it a try. It's a lot to think about, and yes, it's hard." Tara smiled, and nodded, indicating she was ready for Katie to start. Tara went and stood with calamity at X, where they wouldn't be in the way.

I carried on working Star around still listening to Tara carefully. I looked over to where Tara was setting out the next excersize, It was using part of the last excersize but I didn't mind. "Ok Cool, thanks. It's always nice to talk to find out each others opinions, I like talking, it's interesting to find out what we each think" I explained to Tara smiling.
I continued trotting Star around and decided to do something a little different. I came down to the C end and turned down the three quarter line then cleanly leg yielded right out to the track. It was clean and nicely flowing especially the crossing over which was very flowing and flexible. "Ok cool, I can do most days and the times in the days but some days I can't do" I explained looking over to Tara and smiling at her.
I heard Tara talk and didn't want to loose my concentration so I nodded and gave a quick smile to Tara. I did as Tara said and did start to do some transitions going into the different speeds. As Tara spoke I turned to Tara and trotted Star over to Tara. I halted by Tara and patted Star happily.
I nodded and though about what I had to do for a minute then I put it into action. I picked up a trot and kept squeezing to make it bouncy and lively but not out of control. I made sure Star was listening to me before I started the excersize. I turned round the cone at C and headed down to the trot poles. I went over the poles nicely and bouncing and hit the track the other side of the poles at A.
As I hit the track I sat and squeezed Star and she went into a lovely bouncing canter ready for the next part of the excersize. I headed for the pole on the floor in between the two blocks and canter Star over it nicely making sure there was no elevation. I asked Star to just stay in a straight canter over it and she did as I asked and went over it with no elevation. I smiled and patted Star happily.
As I finished the excersize I grinned and then brought Star back to a trot and then trotted round and came back to a walk with Star and looked over to Tara smiling. "Was It right?" I asked smiling and patting Star.

Tara watched Katie. Yes, it wasn't perfect, there were a few major things wrong, but mostly minor. She nodded. Being an instructor was hard work, she didn't like telling people what was wrong when they thought they did things right. Tara nodded. She turned to Katie. "It was pretty much right. Just a one major thing wrong, that might seem minor, and a couple of minor things." Tara smiled. She pointed to the pole. "When you came over that, the right aids to stop her elevating or going into extended canter weren't used. It's something you'll learn in time. Imagine you were doing a rein back, but doing it in front of a jump, but use much subtler commands, and still go into the 2 point position." Tara smiled.
"Apart from that, just tidying everything really. It was really good for a first attempt." Tara glanced down at Calamity and smiled. She looked over to the jumping arena. "I think we've done enough warm ups in this area. Let's go over to the jumping arena."
