Chelsea stood next to Bee, her bay mare. The mare was being generally all right this morning, only slightly skittish. Chelly had finished tacking her up about 20 minutes ago, and was about to warm her up. She nodded to the girl that was her groom for that class, and handed her the reins. Taking the end of the reins and her crop in one hand, Chelly put her foot in the stirrup. She sprung up lightly and settled herself on Bee's back. The mare hadn't been doing a lot of work until Chelly had decided to enter for the competition. And she had had to gently bring her back into work. That was why they were only entering the beginner hunter class.
Chelly walked the mare into the warm up arena. And got her trotting up nicely. She sighed, Bee would be good in dressage. Shame they forget to apply to do one of the dressage classes. But hunter and show jumping was good for Bee, it would prepare her for the jumping Chelly wanted to do with her over the next year or so. She warmed the mare up over a few low cross poles and over one 1 foot 6 vertical, before slowing her to a trot and then to a walk. And taking the mare out of the warm up arena, knowing she was the first in her class.

Hearing her name called over the loud speaker, Chelly shivered. She patted her mare, and nudged her forward with her voice. They trotted into the arena and Chelly nodded at the man who held open the arena gate. She heard him close it, but ignored it, and focused on the jumps. She had memorised the course and walked it about seven times. She'd even been allowed to have one go at one of the jumps with Bee, at which, Bee had refused, it was a great confidence giver! Not.
She found herself hearing the bell and kicking Bee into canter. She flowed forward nicely, with a sense of impulsion and Chelly actually had control over her. She rode the mare forward and they soon found themselves at the first jump. It was a one foot cross pole. Simple. She had no problem steering Bee to the middle and the horse cleared it by miles. She flicked the rein sideways slightly to ask for the turn and rode the diagonal. They made the next turn and as they cantered along the long side, Chelly found herself settling into a rythym. The brush fence wasn't the one they had attempted, but she felt Bee getting a bit unsettled. Chelly reminded herself it was only 1 foot, and rode it easily. She gathered up her reins and neatened herself up as they rode the rest of the landing. She came off the track with the mare and the gate was the highest so far, yet only 1 foot 6. The natural flower fillers jolted her confidence. She got left behind with the jump as Bee took off, but no rail was knocked. She gathered herslef and turned, heading back towards the jump they'd just done, but turning onto the double instead. the first part of the combination was only a foot high, and Bee leapt it.
As they covered the short distance of the awkward three strides, Bee lengthened her stride and made it in two, with a perfect take off also. As they neared the final jump, Chelly was even more worried. The jump they had attempted was the last oxer, and Bee had refused it. They'd had all clear so far, was Bee going to jump the next two perfectly? Before she could decide, Bee was jumping up and over the vertical. Another clear! Chelly managed to keep the messiness to a minimum and as they turn down towards a, she slowed down the actual canter and then sped it up with full control, they needed the boost to push Bee over it. Bee could easily jump the small height of it, despite being out of work for a while, it was his confidence that needed to be boosted, and with hat impulsion, there was no way Chelly was letting him stop, a knock was better than a refusal. The oxer was leapt, the rail was clipped, finishing the round, Chelly looked behind, and didn't see any poles on the floor. It was a clear round!
