Megan walked into the noisy pet shop. She smiled to herself, excited about buying her first pet. Passing the puppies in their kennels, she thought about buying one, but decided it would take too much time away from riding.
As she walked through the Rodents aisle, Megan spotted a cute little black-and-white guinea pig shuffling around in the timothy hay bedding in its cage.
She walked up to the cage and peered at the information card hanging on it. The guinea pig was a female and two months old, with no name.
"Hi there, sweetie," Megan said softly, pocking her finger through the cage bars. At first, the guinea pig didn't seem to want to come anywhere near her, but soon Megan felt the soft fur rubbing against her finger.
Thinking about how great it would be to have the little guinea pig for a pet, Megan looked around for a clerk. She spotted one a few yards away.
"Hi, I'd like to buy that black-and-white guinea pig over there," I said smiling widely.

As I finished hooking some dog leads onto the wall, I turned around to see a girl looking at the guinea pigs. I smiled as she asked for the little black and white one. "Sure," I nodded, coming over to her and opening the cage. "Would you like to hold her?" I asked with a warm smile. I gently picked up the guinea pig from the cage and held her in the crook of my arm, waiting for the girl's reply.

I smiled and gently placed the guinea pig into her hands. "I'm just gonna go and get some things ready, bring her over to the desk when you're ready okay?" I told the girl with a smile.

Megan rubbed the guinea pig's back gently with her thumb, hearing an occasional squeak from the tiny animal. Hmm . . . what should I name you? Megan thought, watching the little creature sniff her hand. "What about Lily?" she asked aloud. "Yeah, I think Lily will work just fine." Very happy about her new pet, Megan walked over to the desk.

I smiled at the girl as she approached the desk. "She's a cutie isn't she?" I laughed. I reached under the counter and pulled out a small cardboard box with slits cut into the sides. "You can just pop her in there when you're ready," I said, sliding the box towards the girl. "Do you need help with a cage or food for her or anything?" I asked helpfully.

"Yeah, that's why I picked her out, she's so cute," Megan said, opening the box and placing the guinea pig down gently on the bottom. "And it would be really nice if you could help me pick out a cage, feed and some bedding; she's gonna be the first guinea pig I've ever had, and I don't really know a whole lot about them.

I smiled at the girl and nodded. "Sure," I said. I left the counter and walked over to where the cages were. "If you're just having her, she should be fine in something this size," I said, gesturing towards a medium sized plastic cage. It came with a water bottle and feed bowl, as well as a hidey-hole for the guinea pigs to hide in. I grabbed a bag of pine shavings from the shelf underneath the cages. "She's already used to this bedding," I said. "And we feed them a bag of mixed pellets and seeds along with fresh fruit and veggies. But she'd probably eat anything if you got her used to it slowly," I said with a smile. "I'll give you a free booklet about the basic care of guinea pigs too," I said. "It's pretty handy to help you get to know how she behaves and stuff."

Megan looked around at all the things the girl had pointed out to her. "Thanks a lot," she said, glancing back at the little box where the guinea pig rested in.

I smiled to myself as I noticed her glancing back to the guinea pig's box. "That's basically all there is to it," I said to her. "You can get some extra stuff for worming or bathing her if you want, but it isn't really 100% necessary. She's already been wormed here this month," I smiled. "You can also bring her here if you need her toenails trimmed," I added. I knew how annoying it was trying to hold an animal with sharp claws. "Is that all you need?" I asked.

I smiled. "Cool, we'll get you sorted then," I said. I carried the supplies to the desk and scanned them all. "That comes to fifty dollars," I said with a smile.

Megan whistled when the girl said hgow much it would cost. She rummaged in her wallet and pulled out two twenties and a ten, handing it to her, "Just curious, but, do you know how long guinea pigs live?" Megan asked out of an impulse.

I laughed when the girl whistled. "Yeah, it's a bit pricey," I said apologetically. Most of our cages were pretty expensive. I nodded at her question. "They usually live for four to eight years," I said. "But I've known a couple that have lived for nearly twelve." I handed her a booklet and smiled. "This has all the basic information about guniea pigs, what to feed them, how to hold them and a bit about their life," I said. "Should help you get up and running," I added with a laugh. "Enjoy her," I said with a smile. I turned around when someone else walked into the store. "Have a nice day," I said to the girl who bought the guniea pig. "Feel free to come back if you have any more questions." I smiled as I recognised Ella coming in. "Hey Ella," I smiled. I raised an eyebrow at her question. "Unfortunately, no," I said with a small laugh. "Not yet anyway. The only retrievers we have are goldens or curly haired. If you're desperate for a Toller, I think there's a breeder not far out of town though," I said to her. "We're thinking about getting a couple of pups within the next week or so though."

I nodded and smiled at Ella. Going behind the counter, I scanned the list of numbers we had printed out. Finding the breeder, I scribbled down the phone number and address on a scrap of paper and handed it to Ella. "There you go," I said with a smile. "Hope you find one," I added. "If you don't, we always have pups in need of a home here. And adult dogs occasionally too."

"Have a good day," I smiled to the girl who'd bought the guinea pig. I turned to Ella and nodded. "Yeah sure." I pointed her over to the collars and the many different brands of dog food we had. "Are you gonna buy a puppy or an adult?" I asked her curiously.

I thought for a second,"A pup probably, hey why dont i give the breeder a ring and see what they got?huh."I dialed the number into my blackberry and pressed the phone to my ear,"Hi,it's Ella Blakemen here,I go to Willow springs riding academy and was wondering if you had any nova scotia duck tolling retrievers..................uh huh...............ok,so when can i pick up..........k,that sounds great,thankyou......bye"I hung up and beamed at Grace,"They've got a lovely golden pup,and i can go pick her up in an hour, can i get the stuff for a pup then?"

I smiled. "Okay then," I said to her. "Well, the breeder can probably advise you on what food to give him, I don't know how old he is or what brand he's been fed on so you'd best leave that up to them," I said. "But everything else, I can help with!" I led Ella over to the collars and leads. "Well, these are all our collars," I said. "And if you want a bed for him, they're just over there," I pointed. "There's bowls and things over a few aisles; I can go and grab a couple if you'd like, but there's heaps of choices. The same with toys." I shut up, letting Ella have a look at the collars.

I smiled. "That one is three dollars," I told Ella. I showed her a couple of blue leads we had; a dark blue nylon one, a light blue nylon one, and a dark blue one that ended in a choker chain. "There's these ones," I said with a smile.
(By the way; I'd love to see your website! haha sorry bout that. And I'm sorry if prices seem off; I'm just saying the prices that they would be here in Australia, I'm not sure what they'd all cost in other countries :L )

I laughed. "Okay then," I said. "Well, there's not much else. Toys are a big thing for a puppy, make sure you have plenty of those, and bowls and stuff. But other than that, anything else is optional. He doesn't need a bed, but you can get one if you want. They're kinda expensive though," I said to her.
