Grace
I walked into the boarder barn, past all of the now familiar horses. I stopped to give my stallion a kiss and pet before I continued on my way. I hated hearing Bingo's sad and confused whinnies as I walked away, but today I was working with Rosie. I smiled when I got to the stall of my mare. She eyed me cautiously. We'd come a long way in the few days since I'd had her, but Rosie still didn't trust me...yet.
"Hey, pretty girl," I said to her, clipping a lead rope to her halter and cross-tying her in her stall before I slipped inside. Rosie snorted and stepped away from me, but stopped moving when I set a gentle hand on her shoulder. Just yesterday Rosie had realised that my touch wasn't going to hurt her, and she'd stopped flinching when I touched her.
"There we go," I crooned to her, giving her a sweet piece of apple from my pocket. Rosie sighed and munched contentedly on her treat, closing her eyes as she let me stroke her neck and shoulder. I picked up a curry comb and held it in front of her nose. Rosie took a deep whiff of the rubber brush, gave the edge a nibble and then turned away. I smiled and placed it gently on her neck, and Rosie didn't flinch at all. "Good girl, how about we give you a groom now, huh?" I talked to the mare as I moved the curry comb along her neck, rubbing in circular movements. Rosie didn't seem to mind, so I pressed a little harder and started trying to work the dirt out of her coat. Since she'd never been handled, Rosie had also never been groomed, which meant I had my work cut out for me. I smiled as I worked, talking to her the whole time. Once I'd worked my way down the whole off-side of her, I cautiously put my hand on her rump and slipped around behind her. Her ears twitched a bit and she turned to look at me, but she didn't try to kick me.
"Good girl, Rosie!" I said, giving her another piece of apple to mnch on. I continued grooming her with a soft brush and a mane comb, slipping around behind her and underneath her head. "Atta girl," I said to her, digging my last piece of apple out of my pocket. Rosie nuzzled me for more, and it took everything I had not to throw my arms around her then. "Sorry girl, there's none left," I laughed. Rosie snorted. "You ate it all, greedyguts!" I scratched the top of her forehead, right under her forelock. Rosie leaned into my hand, and I rubbed her whole blaze. I looked down at her feet and frowned. "I'll clean your hooves another time, baby girl," I said to her. I unclipped Rosie and sat on the floor of her stall. I knew she wouldn't hurt me in here; it was her safe place and the place where I fed her. I closed my eyes and leaned my head back, breathing in the smell of my dusty filly.
