I stroked Rosie's neck encouragingly as we stepped onto the trail. She'd come a long way in the few months that I'd had her, and it was time for her very first trail ride. "I wish Lucy was here," I murmured to the mare. "She would have loved to meet you." I played with Rosie's mane as she walked slowly down the trail, her senses alert. I missed Lucy so much, I hadn't seen her for ages. She would've been perfect to give us some company on Rosie's first hack out. I didn't want to take her alone, but I didn't have many friends besides Lucy at Green-Briar. I sighed and focused on Rosie, giving her a long rein and letting her look around as much as she wanted. The sky was a clear blue with a few fluffy white clouds sailing past. I smiled and took a deep, relaxing breath. The crisp, fresh air helped to calm me and I settled into the saddle more comfortably. Rosie snorted and jumped as a couple of birds flew from a tree right in front of her, twittering madly. "It's okay, baby," I said softly to her, rubbing her neck. Once she'd settled, Rosie walked on again, arching her neck and nickering quietly every few moments.
