Sara
Sara walked into the barn and down the aisle, a small smile creeping across her face. She stopped briefly on her way to feed a mint to Toffee, her new mare. "Hey girl," she murmured, before continuing on her way. A few stalls down, she stopped again and grinned up at Desert, her tall thoroughbred gelding. "Hey gorgeous man," she said softly, opening the stall and clipping a lead rope to Desert's halter. The gelding nickered softly, nudging Sara. She smiled and hugged him around the neck, pressing her cheek against his warm face.
"Sorry I haven't been around much lately boy," Sara said to Desert quietly, leading him out of his stall and clipping him into cross-ties. She grabbed her blue curry comb from the grooming kit outside Desert's stall and began to work in circles down his body, currying out all the dirt and old hair in his coat. "I've just been really busy with Toffee, she's going well don't ya think," Sara spoke as she worked. Her gelding turned his head to look at her curiously, flicking his ears to catch her words.
"But we're gonna do a lot more work together. We're gonna be doing a lot of jumping, what do you think about that?" Sara asked, laughing as Desert pawed at the ground and bobbed his head. "You just wanna go for a ride, don't ya buddy?" she laughed, ducking underneath Desert's neck to curry the other side of him. She continued talking to him as she brushed, not caring how long it took her to groom Desert. She felt bad that she hadn't spent a lot of time with him. She'd got so caught up in having a horse like Toffee, who wasn't crazy and who didn't spook, who could do dressage and didn't knock down nearly every jump she came across. "But I really miss you boy," she whispered, rubbing a hand down the gelding's shoulder.
Sara tucked the curry comb back into the grooming kit and pulled out a soft body brush, sweeping it across Desert's deep brown coat and brushing away all the dirt and hair that had been pulled up before. She smiled and scratched Desert's forehead, lifting his forelock and brushing under it.
"I love you Dez," she murmured, kissing the gelding's nose. Sara sighed, and pulled her jumper tighter around her as a gust of chilly wind blew into the barn. "It's a bit cold today," she laughed as she brushed down Desert's legs. She bit the inside of her cheek, knowing that going out on a cold morning with Desert was just asking for trouble. The thoroughbred was always friskier when it was cold. "I don't care," she muttered stubbornly to herself. She just wanted to spend time with her horse, no matter how crazy he got.
