I walked into the arena, it was dark outside and the arena was lit by the lights hung around it. I looked around and found the barrels and turned to Rory. He was a beautiful gelding with a bay coat and dark black thick mane and tail, he was tall and dainty while at the same time being a great looking well built barrel horse. I flipped my connected reins over his head and turned making a kissy noise for him to follow me. I walked over to where I had saw the barrels and picked up the first one, I drug it out and placed it in the right position for the first barrel. When I was setting up the second one I heard a thud and turned to see that Rory had knocked over the first barrel with his head and was now pushing it around like a toy. I sighed and rolled my eyes going and getting the new barrel from him, he snorted and pawed the ground wanting it back, "no now get! Ya big oaf!" I said with a laugh as I shooed him away from the barrel as I set it back up, I kept my eye on him as I went for the third barrel and then I had to turn my back to him to set the third up and what should I hear? A barrel falling and being hit with a hoof. I turned to see the red gelding rolling it across the arena with both his foot and his head, I sighed and went after the barrel, "RORY!" I yelled to him his head snapped up and he looked to me with a snort and head whip, as I walked towards him for the barrel he whinnied and bounced away from me taking off towards the edge of the arena and stopping a little ways off watching me. I set the barrel back up watching Rory the entire time I did so. Finally when the course was done I went to get my gelding... If only I had known what trouble that would be....
I walked towards the now flighty gelding whispering soft words trying to get him to come to me, I was close enough to almost grab his halter when he squealed and took off at a prance, I sighed and followed him around the ring when I finally got close to grab him I did and instead took out a small candy I had in my pocket, "go ahead boy take." I said with a smile, he stretched out his nose and quickly grabbed it before jumping backwards when I tried to catch him, I smacked my forehead, what was with him today! I had only rode him once before and that was with his other home never alone. I sighed and dropped my head thinking of a way to catch him without making him feel threatened by me.
I started to think and then said, "okay boy if you want to barrel race tonight get your horsey butt over here." I said it like an over bearing mother while pointing at the ground. He snorted and did a half nicker/whinny thing and started prancing around me and then went after the first barrel again. I groaned and went after him, I got to the barrel first and said, "ha! no ya don't!" I said with a smile, he whipped his fiery head and took off for the third barrel, I ran after him and somehow got in front of him and said, "get outta here!" He whinnied and turned on a dime back around the arena.
It was a little while later and I was having fun now, I was running around the arena with a goofiness I didn't know I still had. Rory was chasing me staying far enough that I couldn't grab him but close enough to keep chasing me. Finally he caught me and bumped me with his nose before turning and taking off around the arena, I laughed and start trying to cut him off. Finally I caught up to him and smacked his shoulder and then I turned and ran from him again. He whinnied after me and lopped back up to me and then slowed down chasing me around the ring again. Finally I couldn't take it anymore and fell down leaning against one of the barrels panting, my legs outstretched, Rory slowly walked up to me and dropped his head and I leaned my forehead against his. It felt amazing having this with a horse again, my stomach knotted with fear again. I wanted to forget about Apollo's problems for awhile that's why I was here. He had been so messed up and bad off lately I was worried sick that his time might be coming soon. Rory snorted and ruffled my hair, I smiled and rested my hand on his neck. This felt great and awful, I felt like I should be spending this time with Apollo and not out here having fun with a new horse that would take his place fully one day, the bay gelding nickered and swished his tail knowing something was wrong, how did horses know so much? I mean really did they actually read your mind or something because he was all serious and even looked slightly worried about me. I patted his neck and whispered. “Its okay boy, I'm just scared that all.” I lifted my head and looked back at the sky slowly stroking his nose. As she stared up at the sky she thought silently to herself. If I lose him I will lose the one who taught me how to survive. And then she whispered a small prayer hopping that somehow Rory could deliver it for her. “God please take care of Apollo I think he has a lot left with your help. So please let me keep my best friend.” Rory sighed and lowered his head more, I smiled and continued to stroke the gelding red coat wishing it was an ebony coat and that his brown eyes were blue....
