Cassie waited for Sara outside the stables, mounted up on her handsome black stallion. Dante had his brand new cross country boots on and his posh jumping saddle. Cassie wore black jodphers and her long black boots, plus a snuggly grey hoodie. Her hair was pulled back in a low ponytail.

Sara bounced out of the barn leading a lazy Desert. He swished his tail and then pinned his ears as he saw Dante. "Get over it already," Sara laughed, sliding her stirrups down and swinging easily onto her tall gelding. "You a bit cold there Cas?" Sara teased her friend. She was only wearing jeans and a purple t-shirt. She looked at Dante's fancy saddle and then glanced down at her own beat-up all purpose. "I think Dez needs a new saddle..." she said with a laugh, guiding her horse to stand over near Cassie and Dante.

Sara laughed. "Yeaaaah," she said, grinning. Cassie couldn't have already forgotten that her, Sara, Daniel and Molly were already going tack shopping soon. "Blonde much?" Sara muttered to herself. She laughed at Cassie's comment, then pushed Desert into a trot. "Let's go, Wallaby-Joe!" she declared, riding past Cassie and poking out her tongue. "Or are you afraid to get Dante's prissy new shoes dirty?" she asked with a wink.

"You hear that boy? Prissy! Prissy new shoes! Let's go, boy!" she pushed him on and trotted beside Sara, sticking her tongue out. "We'll show you prissy!"

Sara grinned and shook her head, not even bothering with words. She poked her tongue out at Cassie in reply to her comment, and then pushed Desert into a canter. He exploded past Dante with a shrill whinny, lashing out with a hind leg as he bolted past. "Desert!" Sara exclaimed, pulling up her gelding and giving him a sharp slap on the shoulder. She turned around and gave Cassie an apologetic shrug. "Sorry Cas!" she said. She held Desert back as he pulled on the bit and made him wait for Cassie and Dante to reach them.

Cassie and Dante both flinched as Desert bombed past. Dante reared up, his front legs flailing in the air. Cassie calmed him and trotted up next to Desert. "Someone's grumpy today!" she said, eyeing Desert's back side.

Sara sighed. "Sorry," she said again. "He's always spooky up here, since what happened with Ari," she grumbled.. She patted Desert's shoulder, hoping to calm him. He squealed at Dante, but Sara turned his head away. "He should be okay in a bit." She focused on keeping her heels down and making sure she wasn't pulling on Desert's mouth, and he relaxed slightly, his gait going from stiff and choppy to more smooth. "I think he'll be right," she said, giving Cassie a quick smile.

Cassie rolled her eyes. "These two are loopy!" she patted Dante on the neck. She saw the Cross Country horse ahead of them, and so did Dante, who, as usual, began prancing away, tossing his head. "I can't wait! Neither can D!" she said to Sara.

Sara smiled. Desert tossed his head and snorted nervously, shying away from the jumps in front of them. Sara rolled her eyes. "Hopefully once he gets jumping he'll settle down," she said to Cassie. She let Desert stretch out and trot to the course, then walked him to a jump and let him a have a good look at it. "See, it isn't gonna hurt you," she said soothingly to her big gelding.

Cassie began trotting Dante in circles, making them bigger each time. She changed the rein, trotted some more and then asked for canter, keeping his concentration on her. She turned him towards a two foot jump and he cleared it, attempting to canter off, but she checked him and bought him back round to where Sara and Dez were.

Sara grinned at Cassie. "Nice!" she said with a smile. She turned Desert away from the jump and walked him away from it, then asked for a trot. Once Desert was trotting nicely without spooking, Sara guided him into a canter, then rode him to the jump. Desert skidded to a halt right in front of it, so Sara turned him and asked for the canter, turning him in a small circle before the jump and riding him up to it. Desert chucked in a buck and tried to shy away, but Sara aimed him straight for the centre of the jump, and with a sharp kick and a rap with her crop, Desert leaped the jump effortlessly and landed nicely on the other side. He came straight back to a trot when Sara asked him, and she gave him a huge hug and a pat. "Good boy!" she grinned, tousling Desert's mane and smothering his neck with kisses. "You're such a good boy Desert!" She looked up at Cassie and grinned triumphantly.

"Well done, S! He's a bit stubborn isn't he!" she grinned, then turned D towards another smallish jump and took it easily, cantered in a circle then turned him at a 2'9. He jumped it massive, making Cassie laugh. "Clever boy!"

Sara laughed. "Hey, it's his first time doing cross country," she said with a smile. "Well..First time actually jumping here anyway," she added. She gave Desert another pat on the neck and then pushed him into a trot and then a canter, aiming him for the same two jumps Dante had just cleared. Desert snatched the bit just before the first jump and leaped it, and Sara fought to slow him before the next one. He came back into a nice canter and then jumped perfectly over the 2'9. Sara grinned and gave him a huge pat after the jump. "He's a natural!" she laughed, super proud of her horse. She looked for a bigger jump and saw one that was slightly smaller, but led into some water. "Let's see how this goes," she said with a wink. She cantered Desert towards the jump, and as he jumped it he snorted in surprise at the water landing. Splashing through the water, Desert charged out of it and bolted. Sara cackled with laughter and pulled him around, trotting him calmly over to Cassie and Dante. "BAHAHAH!" Sara laughed, leaning on her horse's neck to support herself as she doubled over.

Cassie clapped as they cleared the first two, then burst into laughter as Desert gallopped through the water. "OOH! I wanna try." Cassie trotted Dante over to the water jumpa dn he jumped it without a second thought, landed in the water, squeeled, bucked about 5 times, half reared then leapt out of the water. Cassie clung on and cantered back over to Sara who was still laughing. She burst out laughing again. "These two are NUTTERS!"

Sara laughed at Dante's reaction to the water. "God these two are special kids," she laughed as Cassie cantered back over to her. "Was it cold, poor little diddums?" she asked Desert, hugging him around the neck. He took that moment to stretch out his neck and shake his entire body, scattering water droplets everywhere. When he shook, Sara was tipped sideways and she landed on the ground, still holding the reins. She shook with silent laughter, covered with water. "Far outttt," she laughed, lying on the ground. She stood up and brushed herself off, then quickly remounted Desert, still laughing.

"Shut up," Sara grumbled lightheartedly. She grinned at Cassie and then pushed Desert into a walk. "Take two!" she called out, trotting and then cantering Desert in a couple of circles and then aiming him at a three foot jump. Desert cantered smoothly towards the jump and leaped it, then cantered back around to Cassie and Dante. "Good boy," Sara praised him with a smile. "He's a lot more relaxed now don't ya think?" she said to Cassie, rubbing Desert on the neck.

Sara grinned, pleased. "Let's make a longer course," she said to Cassie, looking for jumps that would make up something slightly challenging. She wanted about five or six jumps in the course, so she started pointing out certain ones. "The water one's in," she said, laughing. "How about we start with...That log," she said, pointing to a jump only about a foot and a half high. "Then, um..Over there," she said, pointing to a hedge that was just over two foot. "And then the water jump," she said, tracing the path to take in the air with her finger. "Hmm...What else?" she asked Cassie's opinion.

"Hmmm... how about that?" Cassie ponited to a rustic-looking triple bar oxer. It was about 3 foot, and looked complicated.

Sara nodded. "Done." She said. She pushed her hair back behind her ear as she looked over the new course quickly, then she dug her heels into Desert's sides and made him jump into a canter from a halt. She smiled as he got it right and then cantered him over to the log. Desert barely jumped over it, then cantered down to the hedge. He balked a little but Sara gave him a squeeze with her legs and he jumped over it. the top of the hedge scraped his belly and he bucked a couple of times after he landed. "Sara laughed and pushed him through the bucks, then aimed him for the water jump. doubling back the way they'd just come. Desert landed in the water with a splash and Sara leaned back firmly so he didn't take off and bolt again. She trotted him up the bank and turned around, aiming him for the oxer Cassie had chosen. "Here we go," she muttered, pushing Desert back into a canter and riding straight for the triple bar jump. She checked him just before the jump to get his striding right, and he catleaped the oxer, landing awkwardly and stumbling before he cantered away on the other side. "Geez, are you unco or what?" Sara laughed to him once they were back with Cassie and Dante. Desert snorted and tossed his head, pawing at the ground. "Moron," Sara laughed, rolling her eyes and giving Desert a hug around the neck.

"Woooo! Go SARA!!!!" yelled Cassie, standing up in her stirrups as they cantered up. "Skills!" she grinned, then pushed Dante on into trot, then canter. She steadid him before the log, and they cleared it, Dante catleaping and jumping huge. Cassie laughed and headed for the hedge. Perfect. Next, the water jump. Dante bucked yet again through the water, and galloped out of it, Cassie pulled him back and turned him towards the oxer, trusting he'd clear it. She allowed him to stretch out before the jump and they cleared it perfectly, landing smoothly. She let him stretch into a gallop and they galloped the lenght of the field, before trotting back to Sara and Desert.

Sara grinned as Cassie and Dante cleared all the jumps. "We should take them for a run together," she said, once they were back after galloping the field. She nudged Desert with her legs and pushed him into a walk, but after a few steps he wasn't walking right. "Get up, lazy bum," Sara said, giving him a boot. Desert tossed his head and rose into a half rear, snorting. "Hm," Sara said, frowning. She jumped off him and ran a hand down each of his legs, but there was no heat in them. She glimpsed something shiny in the grass behind them and then sighed. Lifting up a hind leg, Sara realised that Desert had pulled a shoe. "Great," she said. "Got any idea if there's a farrier at Starry Skys?" she said to Cassie, leading Desert into some shade and tying him to a tree.

"Yeah, he's okay. He's just pulled a shoe," she said, holding it up for Cassie to see. "Must've happened when he tripped after the oxer," she said. "He'll be right, he's done it heaps before," she said. She'd just have to find Gena and ask about a farrier once they were back at Starry Skys. "He'll keep tied there for a while," she said to Cassie, hating to put an end to the fun. "Keep going, we'll think of something fun to do," she said with a grin.

"You sure?" Sara asked. "I'm not fazed," she said with a laugh. "No need to ride back though, I can lead him back to the stables," she said. "It won't take too long; he hasn't damaged his hoof from what I can see." She picked up Desert's foot again and checked over his hoof. It seemed to be fine and he didn't resist when she prodded the frog with her finger. "See? He's all good," she said with a smile.

"If you want," Sara said. She untied Desert and led him forward a couple of steps. "He isn't limping or anything," she said, happy. "Are you sure you don't mind not jumping anymore?" she asked, giving Cassie one last chance to stay. "I can lead him back alone if you'd rather stay here," she said. Desert snorted and pinned his ears at Cassie's horse. "Far out dude, don't get your knickers in a knot," Sara said, scolding him with a jerk on the reins.
