Sara walked down into the border stables and smiled at all the familiar faces. "Hey ponies!" she said cheerfully, pulling faces at the horses that whinnied to her. She laughed and walked to the feed room, picking up an empty bucket. She started scooping feed into it, ready to give to Desert. "Ugh, this stiff stinks," Sara muttered to herself as she poured half a cup of Speedi-Beet on top of the chaff, mix and pellets already in the bucket. Screwing up her nose, Sara closed all the lids to the feeds and walked down the aisle to Desert's stall. The tall gelding nickered eagerly, shoving his nose into the bucket. "Oi, greedy! Get out of it," Sara laughed, pulling the bucket away. Deert snorted and pawed at the floor of his stall, which was covered in extra shavings just like Gena had promised. Sara smiled. "Manners," she warned Desert, shaking a finger at him as he tried to sneak another mouthful. Desert meekly turned his head away so he wasn't facing her and Sara tipped his breakfast into his feed-bin. "Good boy," she smiled, stroking his glossy neck as he shoved his face into the food. He lifted his head, bits of chaff and grain falling from his muzzle. Sara rolled her eyes and sighed, slipping into his stall.
While Desert was occupied with eating, Sara ran hand down his leg, lifting his hoof off the ground. "This isn't sore, is it boy?" she asked, gently prodding his only unshod hoof. Desert didn't flinch, so Sara popped his leg back on the ground. She ran a hand down his sholulder and then left the stall. "The farrier's coming today I think," she told her horse. From inside the feed-bin, a snort echoed up. Sara sighed. "So you have to be on your best behaviour, okay?" she said. Without waiting for a reply from her otherwise-occupied horse, Sara continued. "Which means no biting, kicking, or misbehaving of any kind," she said. "You need that shoe, and there's no riding until you have it, so just be good, okay?" she said to him. Desert didn't lift his head from his feed. Sara scratched his poll and smiled as his ears flicked in recognition. "So you still know I'm here then?" she said with a laugh. Desert's face rose out of the feed and he blinked at her, his overstuffed jaw chewing slowly. Sara grabbed him by the cheeks and stared sternly at him. "I hope you took everything I just said seriously," she said. Desert tried to snatch his head away but Sara pulled him back down to eye-level. "I love you boy," she finished, kissing him on the nose.
